About the College/Unit/Department The Warnell School is a professional school with 64 faculty, 100 support staff, 325 undergraduates, and 195 graduate students. The School offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Forest Resources, Master of Natural Resources, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in the areas of Forestry, Fisheries & Wildlife, Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management, and Natural Resource Management & Sustainability. The school manages 23,000 acres of forestland across the state in support of its teaching, outreach, and research missions. Position Details Position Information Classification Title Assistant Professor Pay Grade FLSA Faculty Rank Assistant Professor Contract Type Tenure Status Tenure Track Minimum Qualifications Terminal degree appropriate for the discipline Position Summary This is a 9-month (0.75 EFT), tenure track appointment with 50% EFT research and 25% EFT teaching responsibilities at the Assistant Professor level in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia. The selected candidate will be expected to develop a broad research program related to soil management. Research emphases could include forest soils, urban soils, the restoration of disturbed soils such as mined lands, or the soil microbiological implications of land management decisions. The selected applicant will be expected to collaborate with faculty in forestry, urban forestry, and water resources and help grow a recently created area of emphasis in community forestry and arboriculture within the Warnell School as well as continue strong programs in water and forest soil management. The selected candidate will mentor graduate students, serve on School and University committees and actively participate in professional scientific societies. The selected candidate will normally teach three courses each academic year. Required teaching will include a semester-long course "Urban Soil Use and Management" that focuses on tree and water management in the built environment and co-teaching a three-week Maymester course "Community Forestry and Arboriculture Field Practicum." Other teaching responsibilities will depend on the selected candidate's interests and areas of expertise. Additional Requirements Applicants must have a Ph.D. in soil science, forestry, urban ecology, arboriculture, or related field. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification The successful candidate will have a strong background in soils, particularly as it applies to growth and management of trees in either managed or unmanaged forests, urban settings, or the restoration of disturbed soils. Demonstrated multidisciplinary collaborative work is preferred with expectations for similar continued efforts with faculty both in Warnell and across the University. Strengths in oral and written communication must be evident and evidence of excellence in teaching is preferred. Evidence of activity in research design, grant development, presentation of results at scientific meetings and publication of results in leading peer-reviewed journals is essential.
