UGA is currently ranked among the top 20 public universities in U.S. News & World Report. The University's main campus is located in Athens, approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta, with extended campuses in Atlanta, Griffin, Gwinnett, and Tifton. UGA employs approximately 3,000 faculty and more than 7,700 full-time staff. The University's enrollment exceeds 40,000 students including over 30,000 undergraduates and over 10,000 graduate and professional students. About the College/Unit/Department

UGA Cooperative Extension was founded in 1914 to bring research-based agricultural information to the people of Georgia. County agents and specialists throughout the state share information on issues like water quality, profitability in agribusiness, family wellness, and life skills. County agents provide soil and water test kits and instruction, advice on safe pesticide use, publications, computer programs, and lessons in consumer skills to improve Georgians' quality of life. They are the local experts in food safety, proper eating habits, child safety, and parenting. UGA Extension coordinates 4-H, Georgia's largest youth program. Each year, almost 200,000 young Georgians participate in community projects, summer camps, and conferences on today's issues while having fun and learning to work together. The leadership skills and values they learn in 4-H last a lifetime. UGA Extension reaches more than 2.6 million Georgians through education programs each year. Millions more rely on UGA Extension's publications, educational news articles, and public television programming for advice and information.

Position Summary
The managing directorship is a limited-term, administrative staff position. The initial contract period is two years with potential for renewal in conjunction with renewal of associated National Science Foundation grant funding the position.

This position reports jointly to the Vice President for Research (VPR) and the Director of the Cooperative Extension SW District to strategize and prioritize projects related to the Next Generational Agriculture project (NextGA) as well as special projects with UGA Cooperative Extension in coordination with the ADE. The managing director is responsible for fostering existing partnerships, as well as forging new ones, with a significant emphasis on developing strategy to form long-term community relationships of mutual value in South Georgia. The managing director works closely with NextGA partners, community members and community development organizations, business leaders, faculty, administration, and staff to identify opportunities to develop user-inspired solutions applicable to rural communities in Georgia, particularly those related to research and innovation.

The director will help develop best practices for engagement with NextGA project partners. The NextGA project components include economic development, community development, innovation-in-place, workforce development, use-inspired research, and improvements in quality of life. Each component will have a community representative in all 20 South Georgia counties included in the project, and team leads for each component serve on the NextGA Executive Leadership Group.

This position will have a high level of financial autonomy and will have the authority to make financial procurement and budget allocation decisions independently. The role will be responsible for vendor hiring decisions, in accordance with UGA and USG procurement policy, utilizing externally sponsored funds. The nature of the position funding from the National Science Foundation is for a preliminary planning phase of work that will result in delivery of a larger, more expansive grant submission. The planning and implementation of the program's growth will be up to 10 times larger than the initial planning grant - both in funding amounts and personnel expansion, if awarded. Thus, this position will have an expanding supervisory role as additional personnel are hired as the grant grows. The sponsor (NSF) has the expectation that this position will oversee all operational elements of the grant, working closely with the PI. This role will work closely with external stakeholders, and be in a position of influence and supervision with those external and internal stakeholders to direct and manage collective inputs toward fulfilling the grant's objectives. This role will develop and oversee workplans by consultants, and be the lead point of contact for all external partners throughout the development of the project. Once additional funding is secured, this position will supervise all additional staff hired with sponsored funds - including administrative, financial, and project management personnel.
