Position Information Classification Title Marketing/Public Relations Professional Pay Grade FLSA Exempt Job Family Public Relations FTE 1.0 Minimum Qualifications Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, or a related field with eight years of related experience. A background in science reporting, or a demonstrated ability to write about scientific research for a general audience, is preferred. Extra consideration will be given to applicants with a demonstrated photography or video background. Position Summary This position is the lead public relations coordinator who directs the implementation of the philosophy of the University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources (Warnell School) as set forth by the dean and key administrators consistent with the goals of the University of Georgia. He/she develops and maintains coherent themes and messaging across the school through a comprehensive communications plan. He/she coordinates and participates in the implementation of promotional ideas and communication products in support of the school's public relations, alumni, and development endeavors. This person writes news communications specifically tailored to emphasize the positive and multifaceted aspects of the Warnell School. This position reports to the dean of the Warnell School and is an active contributor to and leader of the school external relations team. Serves as the school's liaison to the strategic communications team of UGA Marketing and Communications. He/she supervises the work of a graphic designer and manages the annual budget for communications and marketing. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies Ability to create innovative approaches in communicating messages. Possess the ability to understand and interpret information and be able to objectively present news information to diverse audiences of general readers. Be knowledgeable in various media formats, including print, internet and video, and be knowledgeable in both design and video software platforms. Be able to coordinate with writers and Warnell faculty to develop written content for the Warnell alumni magazine The Log, annual report and online websites. Be proficient in using various social media outlets, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities Conceptualize, plan, write and edit publications that support communication externally to alumni and other constituents and internally to faculty, staff and students. Determines editorial content and oversees production of an increasing number of recurring Warnell School publications, including an alumni magazine, annual report, e-newsletters, social media, brochures, handbooks and other publications as assigned by the dean. Writes and edits news and feature stories for the aforementioned publications, as well as for social media and release to local, state and national media. Writes and edits ad copy used in paid advertisements and direct-mail pieces promoting the school's programs and development. Fields media requests on behalf of the school. Selects all stories that appear in The Log magazine and writes or assigns to contributing writers. Writes and/or edits final story drafts published in each issue of The Log magazine. Proofs and edits-to-fit all the magazine stories in design and layout. Works with external designers, photographers and printers. Oversees inventory and distribution of magazine to alumni, donor/friends, faculty, staff, selected students, colleges/schools and VIP constituents. Repurposes content to expand the Warnell School reach through a wide array of communications channels. Work is guided by an annual strategic communications plan which contains editorial and publications calendars, social media calendar, and widely communicated and accepted deadlines. Percentage of time 30 Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities Identify important research, teaching, and outreach programs of the school and explain the significance to the general public in a straightforward, understandable and engaging style for a variety of media. All projects should be approached from a story-first mindset, where the story is identified and then all of the different ways of telling it and audiences with which to share it are identified. Coordinates and participates in the preparation of Warnell stories and news articles, editing copy to conform to proper grammatical style, and supervising the digitizing/posting, printing and distribution of news. Edits all and writes some Warnell School news releases following University format and procedures for news distribution. Leverages existing reporting and communications systems. Coordinates with Research Communications under the Office of the Vice President for Research to support inclusion of timely Warnell School research stories in the ugaresearch magazine. Serves as primary liaison between the school, the UGA Office of Marketing and Communications and the media in response to urgent media requests, visiting news persons, and arranging press conferences. Serves on the Administrative Committee of the Warnell School. Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities Responds directly to incoming media requests received by phone or email. As time allows, scans dozens of unsolicited, incoming media requests from e-mail subscription services, and forwards matching requests to faculty experts by e-mail, phone or hand-delivery. If a faculty member is interviewed, tracks the publication using available newspapers or web-based search engines. Tracks national media opportunities, such as story placements or occasions for faculty experts to be quoted in the news. Oversees Warnell School social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and monitors sites to ensure that information posted is correct and appropriate. Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities Keep frequent contact with Warnell School leadership and key faculty and advisors to plan content, write, edit and verify information in mission-critical Warnell School brochures and direct mailers, such as the school's overview brochure and several degree program recruitment brochures. Contributes editing assistance and quality control on perennial brochures produced by discipline groups, research labs, centers, and units within the school. Edits and proofs flyers, publications and proposals prepared by external relations staff and other units of the Warnell School when the communiqu-- involves a solicitation of information, donations or volunteer participation from alumni or other constituents important to the dean's office. Oversees quality control of Warnell School image, message oversight and brand management including maintenance of style guide. Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities Photography, artwork and digital file management: Takes photographs of school activities and portraits of faculty, staff and students for use in promotional, recruitment, development and alumni communication efforts. Coordinates artwork displays in the school. Manages and updates school digital files archives. Helps update and maintain digital signage throughout Warnell buildings.
