Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

  • Previous/current education or training in an environmental, life or physical science academic program experience working in a laboratory environment



    Position Summary
    The Instructional Laboratory Technician II will provide support for our instructional laboratory program (advised by Dr. Austin Heil) by 1) maintaining marine organisms in our aquaria and equipment/chemicals used for instruction and 2) helping prepare inquiry, service and experiential laboratory courses. This position will also lead science communication and public engagement efforts for The Marine Science Department and assist with other departmental duties as needed.


    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

    • Basic aquarium husbandry skills, including water quality parameters and proper handling of organisms
    • Experience in a laboratory environment
    • Basic knowledge of science
    • Effectively communicate and work well with others
    • Maintain consistent records, pay attention to detail
    • Willing to work with marine animals

      Aquarium/Husbandry
      Lead animal husbandry and general aquarium operations of live organisms used to support Marine Science Department instructional efforts with guidance from the Director of Instructional Teaching Laboratory.

      Instructional Support
      Prepare weekly instructional materials for Marine Science laboratory courses and experiential learning opportunities; Maintain laboratory equipment, chemical inventory and general upkeep of the teaching laboratory to maximize student engagement; Co-develop inquiry-based, service, and experiential laboratory curriculum with Director of Instructional Laboratory as needed/desired.

      Science Communication
      Lead initiatives to communicate Marine Science departmental programs/accomplishments to the public (i.e., faculty spotlights, annual newsletters, and create a social media presence). Co-coordinate Marine Science Department's engagement with the general public with support from Dr. Heil (i.e., K-12 students, adult groups, and K-12 teachers).
