The University of Georgia’s University Health Center seeks
candidates for the position of Lead Psychiatrist in Counseling and
Psychiatric Services ( CAPS ). This position is full-time, twelve
month, and benefited. This position reports to the Senior Director
of Medical Services.
The Lead Psychiatrist provides outpatient psychiatric services
and supervises psychiatric staff which includes staff
psychiatrists, behavioral health nurse practitioners and a clinic
assistant. Provides operational guidance for psychiatric service
delivery which is fully integrated with Counselling Services and
co-located within the Counseling and Psychiatric Services ( CAPS )
department. The role provides specialty consultation to clinical
staff throughout the University Health Center and coordinates the
psychiatric contribution to a collaborative model of care with
behavioral health care managers embedded within the primary care
clinics. Oversees the implementation of policies that govern
psychiatric services. Participates in the on-call and backup
supervision of CAPS call structure. Assists the Medical Director
with budget development and promotion decisions.
All licensed clinicians at the University Health Center are
members of our Medical Staff whose role is to ensure that care is
evidence based and of the highest quality. The membership serves as
exemplars of our student-centered service excellence culture. The
Lead Psychiatrist serves on the Executive Committee of the Medical
Additional administrative duties include participation as a
member of Medical Services Executive Committee ( MSEC ) which
informs the operational decision-making of the Senior Director of
Medical Services and participation in CAPS Leadership Team to
develop and ensure implementation of policies related to CAPS
services pertinent to the relationship between psychiatric and
counselling care delivery and quality.
The Lead Psychiatrist participates as needed within the campus
community on projects or committees that pertain to mental health
and well- being.
The Health Center is a large multi-specialty ambulatory care
organization that is accredited by the Joint Commission with
Ambulatory Care and Primary Care Medical Home designation. Our
service delivery is informed by an integrated wellness, behavioral,
primary and specialty health care ideology.
• MD or DO degree is required
• Completion of an accredited psychiatric residency
• Board certified or board eligible in psychiatry
• Physician licensure in the State of Georgia by date of
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or
One year of clinical experience in a university counseling or
mental health setting. One year of experience as a consulting
psychiatrist in a Collaborative Care Model or similar. One year of
experience with crisis intervention. Completion of an accredited
child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship. History of supervision
of Psychiatric NP’s and working in consultation with counseling
staff in an integrated (Counseling and Psychiatric Services) model
within an overarching Ambulatory Care Medical Model. Supervision of
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Possesses strong interpersonal skills and collaborative skills
that co-align with strong leadership and managerial skills.
Familiarity with accreditation ( APA , IACS , and or JCAHO )
requirements and standards for site visit review. Demonstrated
skill with a multi-cultural approach to mental health care and
wellness. Possesses a brief and focused therapeutic orientation
(cognitive-behavioral, insight oriented or developmentally based).
Strong outpatient alcohol and drug evaluation and treatment skills.
Familiarity with crisis intervention.

Provision of primary (mental health outreach), secondary, and
tertiary psychiatric services to eligible members of the UGA
community within the CAPS scope of service. Performs initial
psychiatric evaluations (routine, urgent, and crisis) based on the
referring problem. Evaluations focus on arriving at a preliminary
diagnosis, an integrated treatment plan, or appropriate referral.
Provide consultation within the legal boundaries of

Oversee the management of Psychiatric Services. Management and
provision of supervision. Support Leadership Team in the overall
management and administration of CAPS services. Maintain
appropriate policies for psychiatry; as a member of the Leadership
Team, participate in policy development for CAPS . Consistent with
UHC & CAPS Policy & Procedure manuals, develop idiosyncratic
treatment plan based on an investigation of empirically supported
treatment options, make appropriate referrals, and accurately
document treatment provided. Provide clinical supervision. Be an
active, respectful, and engaged member of CAPS & UHC teams and work
groups. Actively seek to improve services to eligible members of
the UGA community. Participate in PI projects.

Attend staff and other assigned clinical meetings/committees.
Maintain professional licensure. Support development of CAPS & UHC
staff. Other duties as required.
