About the College/Unit/Department The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. The college benefits pets and their owners, food-producing animals, and wildlife by offering the highest quality hospital and diagnostic laboratory services. Equipped with the most technologically advanced facilities located on a university campus, the college is dedicated to safeguarding public health by studying emerging infectious diseases that affect both animal and human health.

The Department of Large Animal Medicine consists of 18 department faculty members, 2 administrative staff, 3 research technicians, 8 clinical residents, and 6 clinical interns. The clinical faculty is comprised of 4 surgeons, 4 internists, 2 theriogenologists, 2 field service, 2 anesthesiologists, and 2 emergency clinicians. There are 5 graduate students and 1 postdoctoral fellow. The department participates in the college wide Comparative Biomedical Sciences MS and PhD. programs. The current research programs within the department are focused on the areas of systemic inflammation and infectious disease, endocrinology, immunology, neonatology, anesthesiology, regenerative medicine, and reproduction. Members of the department also actively participate in highly successful collaborative efforts with faculty members from other departments within the College and other colleges on campus. The department has a strong track record for teaching, research, and clinical service. The clinical faculty is responsible for didactic instruction in the classroom as well as clinical instruction and service in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The department offers clinical residency programs in anesthesia, internal medicine, theriogenology, and surgery.

Position Summary The Marguerite Hodgson Chair is an endowed position in Equine Studies in the Department of Large Animal Medicine. This position is a lynchpin for the clinical research programs in this department. The appointment will be available at the rank of associate or full professor. A renowned researcher will be recruited to lead a program of research and development with high impact potential. Outstanding applicants from all areas of scholarly research in equine health sciences are encouraged to apply. This prestigious position will be housed in the Department of Large Animal Medicine within the College of Veterinary Medicine, and be available July 1, 2020. This Chair will be supported by an annual income from a $1.4 million endowment. The salary and start up package will be commensurate with the credentials of the candidate and prestige of this position. The University of Georgia provides a highly collaborative and supportive environment in which the opportunity exists for innovative researchers to develop new programs as well as build on existing strengths within the University of Georgia (http://www.uga.edu/research/centers1.html) and the College of Veterinary Medicine (http://www.vet.uga.edu/).

As a primary research position, the time assigned to research will range from 60% to 90%. If the successful candidate is a clinician, up to 25% of time may be allocated to clinical service. The holder of the position is expected to develop and maintain and an independent research program. More importantly, the occupant is to serve as an advisor, catalyst, and collaborator to assist junior faculty and graduate students in their own research endeavors.

Additional Requirements All candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in any discipline within Equine Science. Candidates should have an outstanding reputation with a publication and research record commensurate with rank that includes extramural funding. Candidates must also be eligible for tenure upon appointment.

Requirements for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor: Evidence of national recognition in their research field and minimum of six years post-terminal degree research experience in a faculty or equivalent position.

Requirements for appointment at the rank of Professor: Evidence of international recognition in their research field and a minimum of ten years post-terminal degree research experience in a faculty or equivalent position.

To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate or full professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification Candidates with a DVM or equivalent degree are desirable.

Candidates with an educational or research background that would allow collaboration across the current research areas of the department are highly preferred.

Clinical training in any relevant equine discipline with board certification is advantageous though not essential.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies Candidates with demonstrated leadership in developing inter- or multidisciplinary programs and a record that includes mentoring graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant is also expected to possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, be organized and team oriented, and be adaptable to a wide variety of circumstances.

Relevant clinical skills if time is allocated to hospital duty.
