Position Summary
This position will provide support for research computing at the
CCRC, including compute clusters, websites providing research
services or supporting CCRC research, computers that interface
research equipment, and high-performance computing workstations and
terminals. This position will primarily support Linux-based
research computing facilities at the CCRC, but will provide basic
support for Windows or Macintosh systems as time permits. The
employee is expected to learn new skills and technologies as needed
to solve complex problems in a heterogeneous environment. Some
technologies to be used, in no particular order, are: GNU/Linux,
database management, web server configuration and management,
Proxmox, Docker, Wordpress, Django, Apache HTTP, Nginx, Slurm,
Docker Swarm, Docker Registry, BASH, Python, PHP, networking, VPN,
DNS, LDAP, NFS, DHCP, filesystem management (especially btrfs and
ext4), rsync, ipmi, cluster management, bright cluster manager,
PXE, GPUs for non-graphical computing, Git, Postfix, NAT, IPTables,
package management (apt, yum, dpkg, etc.), cron.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Proficiency administering multi-user Linux installations without a
graphical interface. Basic administration skills - for example,
user management and file sharing, for Windows and Macintosh. Basic
knowledge of the components of a modern computer, including the
ability to replace internal components such as video cards and hard
drives. Proficiency in BASH and familiarity with at least one other
scripting language (awk, perl, python, etc.). Experience with basic
networking, including the setup and maintenance of LANs and
firewall rules. Ability and willingness to quickly learn new
systems and protocols.

work at a computer terminal for long periods of time.

Duties/Responsibilities
Configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of software
residing on the research computers. Most computers will be running
Linux, but there will also be interactions with WIndows and
Macintosh. Specific tasks include installation and maintenance of:
operating systems; scientific and non-scientific software;
resource-monitoring software; configuration management software;
and software for interfacing with scientific instrumentation.

computing hardware including computational clusters, servers,
storage, networking, and specialized devices, e.g., failover
systems. Specific tasks include: installation and configuration of
hardware; troubleshooting malfunctioning systems; replacement of
failed components; and configuration and maintenance of
firmware.

Duties/Responsibilities
Receiving and responding to help requests from users of the
research computing infrastructure. Specific tasks include:
maintenance and monitoring of a ticketing system for managing help
requests; instructing users on specialized procedures;
troubleshooting malfunctioning software; suggesting solutions to
research-related user needs.

Maintenance of detailed documentation regarding the research
computing infrastructure. Required documentation includes:
inventories of available hardware and software; configuration
details for hardware and software; details of specialized
procedures made available to users in the form of HOW-TOs,
Tutorials or FAQs.
