About the College/Unit/Department
The Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics is one of the four academic units in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. It offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees with an enrollment of approximately 320 undergraduate and 90 graduate students. Undergraduate programs include Consumer Economics (with an optional emphasis in Applied Consumer Analytics), Social Entrepreneurship, Financial Planning, and Housing Management and Policy (with an optional emphasis in Residential Property Management). The Department is staffed by 20 faculty members with expertise in consumer decision-making, consumer and family policy, financial literacy, financial planning, housing, and residential property management. Extension and public service faculty provide practical, research-based information to Georgia residents to improve the quality of lives and communities. The department provides research and outreach in support of local government through the Housing and Demographics Research Center.

Position Summary
This Radon Educator position provides education and outreach about radon air and water testing and mitigation. Activities include coordinating, conducting, and reporting on educational programs; responding to inquiries about radon; selling radon test kits; collecting and compiling test kit distribution and mitigation data; assisting in the development of marketing and outreach tools; managing inventory of supplies related to the program; and interacting with radon mitigation and measurement professionals. This is a 100% grant funded position, with new funding awarded annually on October 1.



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies


  • Knowledge about radon, or a willingness to learn about it
  • Ability to confer complex scientific information to groups of varying backgrounds in a way that is easy for each to understand
  • Manage data using an Excel spreadsheet and develop surveys using Qualtrics
  • Manage online test kit sales, distribution of kits and client follow-up
  • Ability to travel throughout Georgia to conduct educational outreach activities
  • Speak about radon in various events open to public

    Coordinate and conduct radon education programs and outreach activities for the public, educators, medical and health professionals, youth, and real estate professionals. One program each month should be evaluated, and all activities are to be entered into the UGA Extension system.
