Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's in natural resources science, MS in ecology, wildlife ecology, natural resource/wildlife management, or a related field. Previous quail working experience is desirable.


Position Summary
The Gamebird and Managed Ecosystems (GAME) Lab is seeking a Research Professional to serve as a project leader on a Northern Bobwhite project near Andrews, South Carolina. The project will examine bobwhite ecology in the context of cattle grazing and fire management. The successful incumbent will work with property staff to coordinate research activities. This incumbent will hire, train, and supervise seasonal field technicians. Work will involve quail trapping and radio-tagging, tracking birds via radio telemetry, vegetation surveys, data entry and management, and other duties as assigned. This position will involve working non-typical hours, with morning and nighttime work needed at different times of the year. Shared field vehicles and field housing will be provided for project leader and field technician - keeping them clean is part of the job responsibilities for all field researchers. The successful incumbent will work closely with property management and collaborating scientists.

This position is currently grant-funded through June 2026, with the possibility of renewal depending on future funding availability.

      Field Research - Trapping and tagging quail, veg surveys, tracking quail:

      • Planning all aspects of field research, such as designing trapping arrays and research protocols
      • Ensure that all necessary equipment is in stock and functioning correctly, ordering supplies, and hiring and setting schedules for field technicians.
      • Conduct fieldwork, including building quail traps, setting up and baiting of traps, trapping quail, tagging quail with VHF radio transmitter collars, tracking quail via radio-telemetry, vegetation surveys, and training seasonal field technicians to assist in all of these duties, as well as providing safety training for field work.

          Data entry and management:

          • Responsible for accurate data entry, proofing of data to ensure data quality control, and for keeping data organized.
          • Writing detailed reports for the PI, sponsor, and other stakeholders will be necessary; additionally, ensure all permitting and IACUC approvals are in order, including reporting annual capture data to fulfill permitting requirements.
          • Coordinating research activities with landowners and other staff working on the property to ensure that research activities do not interfere with other work or hunting activities on the property.

            Research coordination with sponsors, report writing to sponsor and PI:
            • Coordination with the PI and other lab staff at UGA will be required to ensure the best methods are being utilized for field research, to provide status updates on research progress, and to ensure that budgets for the field research are in good standing.
